This year, on the 10th anniversary of the death of Akira Kurosawa, a giant of world cinema, International House of Japan will hold a discussion aimed at understanding some of the reasons for the gap between Kurosawa’s dual legacy at home and abroad.

The WUDSN seeks to provide opportunities for PhD candidates from Waseda University to present their work alongside other scholars within Waseda University as well as outside Waseda University.

The WUDSN also strives to create a stimulating environment in which participants can engage in horizontal and vertical exchanges with professors, experienced researchers, young scholars, activists, government officials, and business leaders.

From December 2007 the Global Institute for Asian Regional Integration (GIARI), located at the Graduate School of Asia Pacific Studies at Waseda University, has agreed to support and work with the WUDSN. Specifically, as part of this collaboration, the WUDSN will focus its lecture series on themes related to Asian integration including but not limited to politics, security, economics, society, and culture.

SSRC/JSPS Fellowships for Recent PhDs and ABDs

The JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for ABDs and recent PhDs provides promising and highly qualified researchers in the humanities and social sciences with the opportunity to conduct extended research at leading universities and research institutions in Japan. Fellowship terms are for single continuous stays from 1 to 12 months (short-term) or 12 to 24 months (long-term). Short-term fellowships must commence between April 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009 and long-term fellowships must commence between April 1, 2008 and November 30, 2008. Applicants for short-term fellowships must submit proof of a doctoral degree received no more than six years prior to April 2, 2008 or a letter from an advisor attesting to the fact that the applicant is within 2 years of completion of degree. Long-term fellowship applicants must submit a copy of a PhD diploma dated no more than six years prior to April 1, 2008.

Call for Papers: Asian Studies Conference Japan (ASCJ)

The Twelfth Asian Studies Conference Japan welcomes proposals for panels, roundtables, and individual papers. The deadline for submission of proposals is November 25, 2007. The conference will be held on the campus of Rikkyo University in Tokyo on June 21-22, 2008.
