will speak on the topic “History and the History of War” A reception will follow in the Marriott’s Delaware Suite A beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The history of war, long at the very center of historical discourse, has languished for well over a century at the academic margins, pushed there by a sense in the profession that the vital issues of the past lay elsewhere. The stories of war never lost their wide popularity, but the historical profession generally left it to authors who wrote for this enduring popular audience, and to the soldier-scholars who sought valuable lessons from studying the subject within a narrowly technical framework. Within the last few decades some change is apparent, not any major institutional or attitudinal shift, but a reawakened interest among a few well-known professional historians, whose previous work was far removed from anything that might be labeled military history, in the subject of war. This apparent change, a welcome infusion of creative talent, and some of its possible ramifications are the subject of this lecture.
